Excel for JAWS Training Tutorial
Understanding the Excel Ribbon and How to Navigate It Using JAWS
Step 1: What is the Excel Ribbon?
The Excel Ribbon is the toolbar that runs across the top of the Excel window. It contains tabs such as "Home," "Insert," "Page Layout," and more, each of which holds a set of tools organized in groups. Understanding the Ribbon is essential for efficient navigation and usage of Excel.
Step 2: How to Access the Ribbon with JAWS
To navigate to the Ribbon using JAWS, press Alt. This action activates the Ribbon and highlights the current tab.
Step 3: Navigating Between Tabs on the Ribbon
Once the Ribbon is activated, use the Left Arrow or Right Arrow keys to move between tabs such as "Home," "Insert," and "Page Layout." JAWS will announce the name of each tab as you navigate.
Step 4: Accessing Tools within a Tab
After selecting a tab, use the Tab key to move through the groups and tools within that tab. For example, on the "Home" tab, you can tab through groups like "Clipboard," "Font," and "Alignment." Press Enter to activate a selected tool.
Step 5: Keyboard Shortcuts for Quick Access
JAWS provides quick access to specific tools using keyboard shortcuts. For instance, to open the "Font" group under the "Home" tab, press Alt + H, F, N. Familiarizing yourself with these shortcuts can significantly speed up your workflow in Excel.
Step 6: Exiting the Ribbon
To exit the Ribbon and return to your worksheet, press the Esc key. This action will deactivate the Ribbon and place the focus back on the worksheet.
